Doping Scandal For Russia: Potential Bans Faced By Athletes From Sports Globally

A four-year ban that is unprecedented could be faced by Russia from major sporting events that are of international stature as they are accused of manipulating doping data in the laboratory.

At a meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, the decision will be taken at a meeting by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

In the Tokyo Olympics of 2020 and the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022, the Russian contingent could be banned from playing. Ruling out of Russia could also happen in the Football World Cup of 2022 to be held in Qatar.

The sports minister of the country did not want to make any comment before the ruling.

Before the start of the meeting in Lausanne, it was demanded by the members of Wada’s Athletes Committee to demand a blanket ban on the athletes of Russia who are to compete at the Olympics.

The Compliance Review Committee (CRC) of Wada has declared earlier this year that the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (Rusada) has been non-compliant regarding various inconsistencies in the key areas for the database test results for athletes.

Yuri Ganus, who is the Rusada boss has confirmed since then that someone has deleted and altered entries thousands in number.

Pavel Kolobkov, who is the Sports Minister of Russia refused to make any comment last week on this issue and told a correspondent from BBC to wait for the results to come out from the meeting held in Lausanne.

The testing data’s full disclosure from a Moscow laboratory is a key condition for the controversial decision taken by Wada last year so that a three-year suspension is lifted of the anti-doping agency of Russia which is a vast doping scandal and is state-sponsored that has been revealed by a scientist who worked as a whistleblower.

The drug abuse was covered up as the accused were helped by the authorities as the Winter Olympics was held in Sochi in 2014 which has been hosted by Russia.

In last year’s Winter Olympics held in Pyeong Chang, Russia did not take part as they were banned that was held in South Korea. Although, those athletes who can prove themselves clean from the whole controversy surrounding them were given the green signal as they were allowed to take part under a neutral flag and can compete there.

Russia could face certain penalties and a raft of measures has been recommended by the Compliance Review Committee of Wada. In the next four years, Russia will not be able to host or can bid for any major event and the right is not granted to them. For the Olympic and the Paralympics games that are going to be held in 2032 as the right to host could not be bid by Russia irrespective of the fact that whether the bidding procedure takes place after or during four years. The flag of the country is not going to be flown at any major event that has been staged in four years. The athletes from Russia along with their support personnel who can only participate in the major events that will be staged for a period of four-year where they can demonstrate that implications of them are in no way done by the non-compliance. Under those circumstances, the athletes get the opportunity to compete not representing a nation but as neutrals.

Russia has already been awarded the right where they can host a major event in the coming four-year period. The right has been withdrawn by the signatory and the event was re-assigned to another country unless it is practically and legally impossible to do it in such away.
