Prior to his current endeavours, Dr. Calcaterra served as an Assistant Professor / Director of the Aortic Surgery Program at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine (2008-2012), an Assistant Professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine (2012-2014), the Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Hennepin Medical Center (2015-1017), on staff within Allina Health Minneapolis Heart Institute – Abbott Northwestern Hospital (2015 – 2019), and as an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Minnesota Medical School (2016-2019).

Holding fellowship status, he is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. He is also a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.

With a passionate interest in physiology and cardiovascular pathologies, Dr. Calcaterra chose to be in the medical field to satisfy his fascination with the elegance and ingenuity of cardiac surgery. His education began at the School of Medicine of the Sapienza University of Rome in Italy, where he pursued his medical degree, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1992. He completed his residency in general surgery within the same institution in 1997, after which he began working on a research project involving the implications of dialysis on a surgical patient. 

In 1999, he moved to the United States where he accepted a research fellowship at the Colon and Rectal Clinic located at the Orlando Regional Medical Center in Orlando, Florida. Following that position, he became a Clinical Fellow of Advanced GI Surgery at Brown University. At that time, Dr. Calcaterra completed the work on the research project he began while he was still attending the University of Rome and he discussed his Ph.D. thesis in the year 2000. He returned to the Orlando Regional Medical Center as a resident in general surgery in July of 2000. His residency would continue at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, Yale-New Haven Hospital in 2001. 

Four years later, Dr. Calcaterra would accept a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Miami and would resume in that role until 2007. Following that position, he completed a fellowship for surgery of the aorta and aortic valve at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas before accepting his first academic position at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.

Determined to enhance his patients’ quality of life, he is board-certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS). The ABTS is an American surgical organization devoted to the surgery of the chest. 

Furthermore, he is board-certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery, an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

The author of numerous publications in prominent medical journals, Dr. Calcaterra has presented his work as an invited speaker at important internationally recognized meetings such as the Centennial National Meeting of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery in 2017, the Annual Meeting of the Society of Thoracic Surgery in 2018 and 2020, the annual meeting of the European Association for Cardiothoracic surgeons in 2019, and the Annual Meeting of the American College of Cardiology in 2018 and 2020. 

Dr. Calcaterra is a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Miami Scientific Italian Community (Miami AIC).

He is also known as a mentor and educator who has written several revered curriculum development pieces for many medical professionals that are well-respected in the healthcare industry, and has trained dozens of medical students and residents in the specialties of general surgery and cardiac surgery.
