Laughing gas has been banned legally but it can be surely said that its use will not be stopped. The government has taken the action to ban it but it is now straight going into the hands of criminals. From the government, it is coming to know that the whole process of making laughing gas is an anti-social process and it can harm a lot to the environment. That is why, now even having nitrous oxide has become a criminal offense.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said that they immediately need a zero-tolerance approach and stressed the importance of immediate justice. But another thing coming to know in this scenario is that contrary to the advice of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD), nitrous oxide is a Class C drug. Thus it should not be banned under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.

Along with this, a review has come up that says ‘no substantive evidence of links between nitrous oxide and anti-social behavior’. Still now the research is going on against the sudden claim by ACMD. For that reason, Suella Braverman told MPs the government was anticipated to ‘take a broader view’ on the case of ‘emerging evidence that [nitrous oxide] does cause serious harm to health and wellbeing’.

She has stated that the government would ‘put an end to hordes of youths loitering in and littering parks with empty canisters’. The shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper has said that the government’s restriction was ‘too weak, too little and too late’ all this time. She has also said ‘There are 10,000 fewer neighborhood police and PCSOs on our streets today than there were seven years ago’.

This gas can a lot of harm to a person’s body. It is seen that the gas is usually sold in a metal canister, which is known as NOS. And it is one of the most used drugs in the United Kingdom by people of 16-24 years. It has the potential to cause severe vitamin deficiency and damage nerves in the spinal cord. These are the major harm that can be caused by nitrous oxide.

Now there are many proposals in the government’s restrictions on anti-social behavior. In this proposal, it is said that the organized begging by criminal gangs is putting the public at risk. Thus they have to look into this matter. Along with that, the fines for graffiti and littering will increase up to £1,000. And the police have to be more spontaneous to clear vandalism.

Nitrous oxide has many other benefits that help us every day like anesthetic in medicine or used in making whipped cream. That is why the government is taking more time to come up with a better solution that doesn’t make any kind of harm society or any different industries. The matter has come to a neurological matter that is it is creating a difficult time for everyone. Therefore, everyone is waiting for the final verdict from the government.
