Due to traveling amidst the coronavirus pandemic, irrespective of the federal guidelines urging the Canadians to stay at home, the Conservative chair of the ethics committee is stepping down from his role.

David Sweet, a Conservative member of the Parliament representing the Ontario riding of Flamborough- Glanbrook, traveled to the United States due to what the Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole’s office has been characterized as a property issue.

However, he chose to stay for leisure without caring to inform the Tory Whip, a decision that further resulted in him tendering his resignation as the chair of the ethics committee.

Furthermore, Sweet also stated that he has plans not to run for re-election, even after serving his ride for the past fifteen years.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Sweet said that now it’s time for him to spend more time with his wife, children, and grandchildren while still contributing from other ways. He is currently out of the country with his wife and has managed to take this difficult decision, and that he shall be back in Hamilton soon.

He also added that he has already resigned from his role as the Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics, and shall not be seeking re-election. It is rest assured that until the next election he and his staff shall continue to serve the people to the best of their abilities.

On December 25, Sweet posted a Christmas video where he detailed that the holidays may look different this year than what they have seen previously, and urged the Canadians to donate to their local food bank.

Sweet said in the video posted on his Twitter account that he is grateful to all the front-line workers who have been working tirelessly everyday to keep them all healthy and safe. Similarly, he has asked all o be mindful of the brave women and men who are away from their families this Christmas in service to their country.

Sweet was charged with overseeing studies into alleged instances of ethical missteps. Last year he presided over the meetings in which the committee had probed into the alleged conflict of interests being tied up in the WE Charity affair and also other inquests into issues of ethical concern.

However, Sweet has now decided to step down from that role.

The Conservative MP now joins the ranks of other politicians who have come under fire in recent time as news of their mom-essential travels to sunny vacation destinations are being unveiled. The list includes Liberal MPs Kamal Khera and Sameer Zuberi, and also NDP MP Niki Ashton, who have all stepped down from their roles as a consequence.

Conservative M Ron Liepert has also taken a trip to California to undertake essential house maintenance.

Multiple Ministers have taken vacations abroad including Rod Phillips and Tracy Allard, both of whom have stepped down from their cabinet roles after their vacations.
