US President Joe Biden’s trip to Europe this week is going to signal that multilateralism has survived the Trump years and it has set the stage for transatlantic cooperation on challenges from Russia and China to climate change, the chairman of the EU summits have said.

Charles Michael, the European Council President has said that ‘America is back’ using the motto Biden has adopted after former President Donald Trump has pulled Washington out of several multilateral institutions and at one point threatened to walk out of NATO.

Michael has spoken to a group of reporters in Brussels and has said on Monday that it means that they again have a very strong partner to promote the multilateral approach which is a big difference with the Trump administration.

Ursula von der Leyen, the chief of the European Union’s executive, and Michael will meet Biden on 15th June. This is going to follow a summit of G7 rich democracies in Britain and a meeting of Nato nation leaders in Brussels on 14th June.

Michael has said that ‘multilateralism is back’ and it is more than a slogan and it is a recognition that a global approach is needed to resolve issues whether they be supply chains for Covid-19 vaccines or fairer corporate taxes in the digital age.

He also said that the three-day G7 meeting in Cornwall in England could be an important turning point that shows serious political commitment behind the government’s pledges to ‘build back better following the economic devastation of the coronavirus pandemic.

It is also going to be an opportunity to address pressure felt by liberal democracies, said Michael, who expects a discussion at the G7 on the need for the West to take a more proactive approach to defend its values in the face of the rise of China and Russian assertiveness.

Michel also said that he has spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday for 90 minutes and told him that Moscow must change its behavior if it wants better relations with the 27-nation EU.

The EU and Russia have disagreed on a wide range of issues including human rights, the intervention of Russia in Ukraine, and also Moscow’s treatment of jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. Michel also went on to say that the relations shared between them have reached a very low point.
