The European Union and Canada have already banned Russian flights in their airspace. And now the US president Joe Biden said that they will also follow them and ban Russian flights. Russian retaliation might be triggered by this move.

Various airlines denied flying over the Russian airspace like United Airlines UAL.O and United Parcel Services (UPS) UPS.N they conveyed on Tuesday. Many other airlines including the U.S. carry Delta Air Lines DAL.N and American Airlines AAL.O.

Biden said in his State of the Union address, ‘I am announcing that we will join our allies in closing off American air space to all Russian flights, further isolating Russia and adding additional squeeze on their economy.’

The White House hosted extensive talks with U.S. airlines about the present situation. The ban will be fully effective by the end of Wednesday.

Russian flights are already barred from most of the parts of the U.S. destinations and also from Canadian and European airspaces as the recent news states.

Though some foreign governments along with some U.S. lawmakers are questioning why the U.S. haven’t the President took this step earlier. On Tuesday the European Union said that they were speaking to the U.S. counterparts about extending the ban.

This step will ensure the EU’s intentions. And this will also deliver a closure from the EU’s side, of airspace to Russian aircraft imposed after the Russian invasion in the lands of Ukraine.

Airlines have been facing a lengthy blockade of the key east-west flight corridors after the EU and Moscow implemented reflective airspace bans. A senior EU official said Russian oligarchs; even those with dual nationalities would not be allowed to get around the EU airspace Ban.

He said, ‘It doesn’t matter whether they are EU residents, if they are Russian nationals, they will be covered.’

He further added, ‘Russian nationals or a Russian company cannot charter, own or control a plane that will be flying into the EU, out of the EU or overflying the EU. So that’s the rule.’

These airspace bans are directly disrupting the supply–chain globally. The chain was already hampered by the pandemic. And again this situation will disrupt the chain which will tell upon the increasing costs of various commodities.

This will hit the hardest the Russian carriers about 70 percent of the flights move in between the European Union and Russia.

The transportation between Europe and North Asian destinations Japan, South Korea, and China will also be hampered by this barred situation.

Frederic Horst said that 20 percent of the air cargo is going to be affected by these bans.

German airline Lufthansa LHAG.DE, Air France KLM AIRF.PA, Finnair FIA1S.HE and Virgin Atlantic have already canceled North Asian cargo flights as they have to cross the Russian airspace.

Some airlines have re-routed once on a weekly basis to avoid Russian airspace. Airlines like Scandinavian airline SAS SAS.ST and Copenhagen – Shanghai services, and also Copenhagen- Tokyo service.
