Senators Relive The Horror All Over Again- Call It Emotional And Distressing

For 90 tensed minutes, the members of the U.S. Senate relived the horror. Even though they had seen much of the insurrection video before, but certainly not in this way, on screens near their desks, screams, and anguish echoing across the chamber, with the Democratic prosecutors explaining in detail about how close they came to danger on January 6 and how much worse it could have been.

If any senator attempted to avoid the images of the violence at the Capitol or even bury the memories of fleeing the violent mob of Donald Trump’s supporters, they were not being able to do so any longer.

Republican Sen said that they lived this once and that was awful. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska said that she recalled how she felt when she evacuated with her colleagues and that now they’re living with a more comprehensive timeline.

While the videos of the siege have been circulating since the day of the riot, the graphic compilation provided a more complete narrative that came with a chilling focus on the riot’s methodical search for lawmakers.

On Wednesday, the new evidence that was being presented included Capitol security videos that showed Republican Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer narrowly escaping the mob, and Vice-President Mike Pence evacuating the Senate Chamber as the insurrectionists chanted for his death outside. The rioters were 58 steps from the senators at one point, the impeachment manager Eric Swalwell informed.

He added that Romney said that he was brought to tears and the video was overwhelmingly distressing and emotional at the same time.

The presentation ended with a video of a Capitol Police officer yelling in pain as he was crushed between two doors o the Capitol’s West fronts. His anguished screams had reportedly filled the quiet, isolated chamber as if he were right there in the room. Some senators were silent afterward, whereas some were sitting quietly alone as if to process it all together.

Maine Sen, Susan Collins described the atmosphere and said that it was extremely quiet.

The House Democrats who were prosecuting the former president for incitement of insurrection at his historic second impeachment trial tried to make it as rough as possible for the senators to play down the violence and by extension Trump’s role in it by showing the violence from various angles. Moreover, they had spent the entire morning replaying Trump’s words to his supporters ahead of the riots and included telling them to fight like hell to overturn his defeat.

It is however unclear if the Democrats’ presentation shall change any votes as Trump is still expected to be acquitted in the end. But the senators are surely puzzled with what they saw.

Ohio Sen said that it seemed like they were reliving a horrible day and Rob Portman who is retiring from the Senator said that he’s undecided on whether to convict Trump or not because that’s not easy.
